2008 10k Race Report
Young, Allen Prevail in Annual 10K

Traditionally held on Memorial Day, this year’s Civitan 10K took place a month earlier than usual. This meant cooler temperatures and the potential for many PRs.
So far this year, Tim Young (21) has proven unbeatable — and today would be no exception. Young beat last year’s grand prix champ Bert Jacoby (25) by more than two minutes — 31:13 versus 33:53. That said, Jacoby moved up from his fourth-place finish a year ago, cutting 37 seconds off in the process. Young also improved, knocking approximately a minute and a half off his last year’s winning time.
Third place Nick Oltman (20) also ran well, coming in at 34:14. And Karsten Brown, who was running race number 29 for the year, came in fourth in 36:04.
The men’s masters race proved very competitive. Sean Killeen prevailed, racing a 36:12. Scott Mersiowsky followed 24 seconds later, while Ted Poulos, who came in second at the previous day’s Spring 5K in DC in 17:25, ran a 36:49.
Duane Williamson (44), who had excelled at the Boston Marathon, just missing breaking the three-hour mark by 18 seconds, put on an impressive performance, racing a 38:18.
On the women’s side, Johanna Allen was first overall at 37:17. Most impressive, however, was Julia Smith (39), who had not been seen in Fredericksburg this year. Smith, who won last year's grand prix in a commanding fashion, set a PR for the 10K in 38:42.
The next three ladies finished within 20 seconds of one another. Master runner Ruth Olson (45) ran a 41:28. She was followed six seconds later by Liz Jones (30), who in turn was followed by Amy Mattingly (29), who ran a 41:48. Smith, Olson, Jones and Mattingly all had raced well the weekend before. Smith won Run for Hospice 5K in Leonardtown, MD (18:33), and Mattingly raced the accompanying 10K, finishing fourth in 43:25. Jones ran Chesapeake's Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:31, finishing fifth, while Olson ran a close second to the formidable master runner Linda Foley at the Run for the Shelter 5K in Leesburg, VA (19:50).
