The Annual Pohanka Cadillac - YMCA
Colonial Beach Triathlon was held for the
first time in July of 1985. Former YMCA
Executive Director Kevin Curtis and
Youth/Sports Director Barney Reiley were
searching for a site to hold a triathlon
where they could have an open swim.
Reiley, having taught at Colonial Beach
High School in 1982, recommended
Colonial Beach as a logical site because of
its open swim accessibility, a preexisting
10k run course, and the potential for a
beautiful bike course. The event was well
received by the town and the YMCA has
developed into a perfect chemistry.
The event has drawn competitors from over
thirteen different states and appeals to both
the recreational triathlete as well as your
more serious competitors.
The event has been afforded the pretige of
attracking such nationally recognized
triathletes such as Jim Knight, Troy
Jacobson, Tim Morris, and Jeff Brown in
the Men's Division; and Maryanne
Zuckerman, Janet Hatfield, Nancy Lewis,
Desiree Ficker, and Deborah Dudas in the
Women's Division

As with any sporting event, if it were not for the dedication and community
commitment of volunteers, these events would not be possible. The YMCA
has been blessed to have individuals and organizations so graciously donate
their time and energy to make this triathlon an annual event. On behalf of the
Board of Directors of the Rappahannock Area YMCA, Inc., I would like to
thank the following organizations for their volunteerism: Pohanka Cadillac,
The American Legion, Rappahannock Ham Radio Club, Colonial Beach Police
Department, King George Police Department, Colonial Beach Rescue, the
Colonial Beach Coast Guard Auxillary, Virginia's Rockin 95.9 Country,
Fredericksburg Rescue, the Happy Clam Restaurant, the YMCA staff, and
lastly, all of the individual volunteers.
Sincerely,
Terry McLaughlin, Race Director
